What size frame do you need for an A4 print?

An A4 print measures 210 × 297 mm, or 21 × 29.7 cm. To frame it without a mount, choose a frame specified to hold that sheet size. To add a mount, choose a larger frame and a mount whose outside dimensions fit the frame and whose window suits the artwork.

Check the actual measurements before ordering. “A4 frame” can describe a frame that takes an A4 sheet, while a mounted frame may use A4 to describe only one part of the arrangement. The outside measurement of the frame is another size again.

Start with these four measurements

It helps to separate the paper from the parts surrounding it:

MeasurementWhat it meansWhy it matters
Print or sheet sizeThe full piece of paperAn A4 sheet is 210 × 297 mm
Visible window or apertureThe opening through which you see the artworkIt may hide some of the paper's edges
Mount outer sizeThe outside dimensions of the mount boardIt must fit the frame's specified capacity
Frame outer sizeThe overall finished frameThis is the footprint to measure against your wall

You may also see the term “rebate”: the recessed part of the frame that holds the glazing, artwork and backing. If a listing is unclear about which dimension it gives, ask the supplier.

Framing an A4 print without a mount

For a straightforward fit, look for a frame explicitly specified for a 210 × 297 mm print.

The frame's lip will normally cover a small amount around the edge, so a suitable paper fit does not guarantee that every millimetre of artwork remains visible. Check carefully if the design has a title, credit or fine border close to the edge.

Some frames come with a removable mount intended for a smaller image. Read the specifications for both arrangements: the size accepted with the mount in place and the size accepted without it.

Avoid using the product photograph as your only guide. It cannot reliably tell you how much of the image will sit behind the frame.

Framing an A4 print with a mount

A mount adds a board border between the artwork and frame. You need two compatible sizes: the mount's outer dimensions and the opening cut into it.

One option is a 30 × 40 cm frame with a mount made specifically for an A4 sheet. For a concrete example, Conclave Brighton lists a mount with a 300 × 400 mm outer size and a 203 × 290 mm window, designed for a 210 × 297 mm print.

That window is smaller than the sheet. If the print is centred, it covers 3.5 mm on each edge. This overlap helps explain why the paper can fit while a small detail near its edge disappears from view.

Those dimensions describe that particular mount, not every mount sold for A4. Check the opening against your artwork before ordering. If important details run close to the edge, ask a framer about a suitable arrangement rather than choosing a standard window blindly.

Will a 21 × 30 cm frame fit A4?

A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm, so it is 3 mm shorter than a nominal 21 × 30 cm rectangle.

A frame sold as 21 × 30 cm may be intended to accommodate A4, but verify the manufacturer's stated compatibility and the visible opening. Don't assume that rounding in a product name settles the fit.

IKEA's UK frame-size guide is a useful starting point for its frame formats. Read the individual model's measurements and mount details as well, particularly when switching between mounted and unmounted use.

A4, A3 and 8 × 10 inches are different sizes

These labels are easy to confuse when browsing frame listings:

LabelDimensionsWhat to remember
A4210 × 297 mmYour paper size
A3297 × 420 mmA larger A-series sheet; not the same as 30 × 40 cm
30 × 40 cm300 × 400 mmA larger metric format that may take an A4-compatible mount
8 × 10 inches203.2 × 254 mmSmaller than A4; an A4 sheet will not fit flat at full size

These are paper or nominal image-format dimensions, not the outside measurements of a finished frame.

An A3 frame can be used with a suitable mount for an A4 print, but an A3 frame alone will not make the smaller sheet fill it. The mount or other framing arrangement still needs to be specified.

Don't trim a print simply because a frame is almost the right size. You could lose part of the artwork or change its intended border. Match the frame to the print first.

Measure the finished footprint on your wall

Once you have chosen the frame and mount arrangement, use the frame's outside dimensions to check the space it will occupy.

Cut a paper template to that finished size and hold it in the intended position. Include space around nearby pictures, shelves and door frames. A4 describes the sheet inside; a wide mount and substantial frame can make the finished piece considerably larger.

For a gift, check what the recipient will receive. An unframed A4 print gives them the choice of framing; a frame shown in a lifestyle image may only be part of the styling.

The quick check before buying

Confirm the sheet size, the frame's accepted print size, the mount's outer size if used, and the visible opening. Then check that any edge labels or borders remain visible.

Neighbourhood Prints is developing A4 map prints, starting with a Highams Park concept preview. Final framing and product details are still to be confirmed, so don't assume the pictured frame is included.
